There are many different reasons why students choose a particular major or why they decide to get an education in the first place. One of the most powerful motivators, however, is the promise of a college degree to change the lives of others. With this in mind, SR Education Group created the Make a Difference Scholarship, aimed at helping students who want to change the world around them with their education -- students who want to put their scholarship money to good use, eventually paying it forward through their own acts and innovations.
To apply for the scholarship, most applicants submitted a two-minute video explaining how they planned to use their degree to make a difference. They also had the option of submitting a photo and essay. Two winners were chosen from the group: one was chosen by our scholarship committee and the other by popular vote. Both winners displayed a sincere desire to help others and demonstrated creativity in how they would like to accomplish their goals.
Popular Vote Winner: Jill
Jill was an inspiring applicant who dreams of helping others and paying it forward through a career in nursing. As someone with severe-to-profound hearing loss, Jill has had the unique opportunity to see how those in the healthcare field can affect sincere change in the lives of others. She took advantage of the scholarship application format and submitted a creative video that earned almost 500 votes. Congratulations, Jill, on winning the popular vote for the Make a Difference Scholarship!
SR Education Group Committee Winner: Harmony
Harmony is an elementary education student whose sincere and passionate video inspired our committee to award her the Make a Difference Scholarship. Harmony was born in Ethiopia and adopted by a family in the states. She hopes that with her degree in elementary education, she will be able to go back to Ethiopia and teach children in her native country. Congratulations, Harmony, on winning the committee vote for the Make a Difference Scholarship!
Make a Difference Scholarship Finalists
In addition to the scholarship winners, our committee chose 5 finalists to win $100 gift cards to pay for textbooks. These finalists enlightened and inspired us with their videos, and would have all been worthy winners of the scholarship. Some of the videos were creative and others simplistic, but all of their applications demonstrated a commitment to education and giving back to the world.
